Yewona (b. Seoul, South Korea) is a self-taught painter who lives and works in New York City and Gloucester, MA.
After a near decade of a career in the commercial real estate tech world, Yewona draws her inspiration from her observations during this time: what it means to live in a post-pandemic world today defined by the capitalistic promise of “the new good life,” fraught with modern myths and ironies.
Yewona’s work is decisively nostalgic, rendered in moody, earth tones. The relationships portrayed though her objects and figures are melancholic and dreamlike. The abstracted architectural backgrounds amplify the disorienting sense of time and place, echoing the “metaphysical” compositions of Giorgio De Chirico.
Yewona holds a BA in Philosophy with a minor in Studio Art from New York University. She subsequently went on to study Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design.
